A Prediction Market User Earned $Nearly Half a Million from Bets Predicting the Ouster of Maduro.
A bettor earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was made public, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the US operation.
Sudden Shift in Predictions
Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion surged in the time leading up to President Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that Maduro had been apprehended.
A particular user, which became a member last month and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a starting bet of $32,537.
The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Market Signals Before Public Statement
Trading information shows that participants estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.
However the market's assessment had jumped to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and surged in the first hours of the next day, pointing to a rapid movement in market sentiment immediately prior to the public announcement was made.
"This specific wager has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.
A handful of other platform users also profited significant sums from bets on the same outcome.
Political Attention Grows
Elected officials are starting to take note.
Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week would prevent public officials from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the past few years, with traders able to wager on everything from sports to politics.
Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the previous administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.
