At least thirteen people killed and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in national projects. They were built at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
