Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing such drugs must be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
