Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a online statement, describing a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She added that even with the backlash, considerable good had resulted from the mission, including elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included leaders in various fields.

The company behind the mission is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
