Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" policies pose an grave risk to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant strengths: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
